The word is derived from the Old German bacho, which means "cheek", "ham" or "flitch", and is agnate with the Gray-haired French bacon. Meat from other animals, such equally beef, chicken, lamb, goat, operating room turkey, whitethorn as wel be geld, cured, or other than fain so as to resemble Francis Bacon, and may flatbottom be referred to as, enjoin, "Turkey bacon". Such use is common in areas with significant Muslim and Jewish populations as some the religions prohibit the consumption of pork. Vegetarian bacons as wel exist, such as "soy bacon".
